Depends how far the opener is below the ceiling but normally we use one piece of punched angle on the ceiling that is long enough to over span the width of the opener and/or the trusses. We do drop two to the opener & then put a fourth piece diagonally between the two drop down pieces to keep the opener rigid & prevent swaying.

Yes the flat pieces that come w/ the opener are flimsy & pretty much worthless for backhanging the opener.
